Home Sweet Home for Shelly & Max

Shelly has moved into her new Habitat home and is loving it and its location right across the street Granby Elementary School where she works and Max attends school. Here is a letter from Shelly to all our volunteers who made her dream of owning her own home become a reality.

Hello My Friends,

Let me start by saying if I had everyone’s mail address I would personally hand write each and every one of you a thank you letter. But I do not. So, that is why I have chosen to send it via e-mail. Also, the reason it has taken me so long is because I wanted to get a feel for my place and then express myself more completely.

Each and every one of you are amazing! I had no idea that my life would change so drastically after meeting and working side by side with the Habitat volunteers. I have been in my home for a little over a month now. I fall in love with it more each day. As I walk through my place I have such fond memories of building, hammering, painting, shoveling, laughing and so on. You all have such huge hearts, patients and talents. The greatest thing for me was that you were willing to teach me. It filled me with pride. I hold my head high and love showing off what we built together.

As for my son Max, at the end of our school day as we are getting ready to make the long commute home ha ha he says, “new house!” I smile from ear to ear and tell him yes, we get to go home to our new house. He gets very excited and jumps up and down. He has slept every night in his own bed. Yahooo!! That means I am getting some much needed rest too.

My daughter told me she had no idea the house would turn out so beautiful. She said she can’t wait to bring some of her college friends over to spend the weekend. She too is very proud of our new home.

Thank you all very much for your time, hard work, friendship and love. You mean the world to me. It has always been very hard for me to dream that some day I would own my own home even though I have worked so hard for so many years. Especially one that I got to help build. I miss you all very much. Just so you know, I am hooked. I will also volunteer my time to Habitat as long I shall live. I hope to see you at the next house or better yet the Habitat Hobble.

All my love,

Shelly Heckerson
